Betty's Hope Plantation

Betty's Hope, a historic sugarcane plantation in Antigua, dates back to 1650, when the island was under English colonial administration. It flourished as a renowned agricultural operation during the era of slavery and became Antigua's first major sugar plantation. Betty's Hope, named after Christopher Codrington's daughter, was owned by the Codrington family from 1674 until 1944, when it ceased operations.

While Betty's Hope is no longer an operating plantation, restoration efforts begun by the Antiguan government in 1990 have conserved key structures. These include twin windmills, a well-preserved Cistern Complex, a decaying Great House (Buff or Estate House), a Boiling House where cane juice was boiled to generate sugar, and a Still House used for rum manufacture.

The Museum of Antigua and Barbuda has overseen its transformation into an open-air museum with a tourist center since 1995. When visiting Betty's Hope to learn about Antigua's rich history, make sure to take advantage of our hassle-free Caribbean transportation options.

English Harbour's Nelson's Dockyard

Nelson's Dockyard is a historic landmark and marina in English Harbour. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with many restored naval buildings, museums, restaurants, and shops. It is part of Nelson's Dockyard National Park, which also includes Clarence House and Shirley Heights, and honors Admiral Horatio Nelson, who lived in the dockyard from 1784 to 1787. Furthermore, this historic area acts as a nexus for Antigua's lively sailing and yachting activities, such as Antigua Sailing Week and the Antigua Charter Yacht Meeting. In 2015 and 2016, it also hosted the famous International Optimist North American Championships. Check out the choices at Lord Nelson Hotel Antigua for convenient lodging near this respected landmark.

Great Bird Island Tour

Great Bird Island is a small inhabited island in the northeastern Caribbean, more especially in Antigua and Barbuda. It is part of the North Sound region, which is famed for its white sand beaches and blue waters. Great Bird is a popular day trip, excursion, and honeymoon site. It is the only place on Earth where one can see the Antiguan Racer snake, Alsophis Antiguae, living in its natural habitat.

The island has rich greenery and rugged rocks. It gets its name from the superb frigatebird, a seabird that nests there. It provides a variety of activities such as snorkeling, swimming, hiking, and even beach horseback riding. Snorkeling along the island's coral reefs allows visitors to witness a variety of marine life, including tropical fish, rays, and even sea turtles. Visitors often take a boat or join a guided trip from the adjacent town of St. John's or other coastal areas in Antigua to reach Great Bird Island. The trip offers stunning views of the coastline as well as opportunity to spot other adjacent islands.
